Maltodextrin has no E-number because retained EU Regulation 1333/2008 excludes dextrins and modified starches from the additive definition, so it is listed as a plain ingredient instead. It is not the same as malt, a flavouring made from sprouted grain, despite the similar name. When wheat-derived, maltodextrin is one of the specific exemptions from mandatory allergen declaration in Annex II of retained Regulation 1169/2011, so it will not usually trigger a “contains wheat” warning; check the bold allergen statement rather than assuming from the ingredient name alone.

What was studied: Two lab-based evidence lines: an in-vitro study of E. coli adhesion to human gut cell lines plus human ileal tissue analysis, and a separate mouse-model study of maltodextrin and colitis.

What it cannot tell us: Neither design used ordinary food-level doses in living humans, so the results describe biological plausibility rather than a measured symptom outcome.

What human studies show about Maltodextrin

Direct human symptom trials of maltodextrin at food-relevant doses are lacking. A 2012 lab study found maltodextrin increased adhesion of a Crohn’s-associated E. coli strain to human intestinal cell monolayers, and the gene bacteria need to use maltodextrin was far more common in ileal tissue from people with Crohn’s disease than in controls — a tissue association, not a symptom trial.

What animal or laboratory studies suggest about Maltodextrin

In mice, diets enriched with maltodextrin worsened chemically induced colitis and reduced protective gut mucus, an effect linked to stress signalling in gut lining cells. The doses used were substantially higher, proportionally, than typical human food exposure. Proposed mechanisms include altered bacterial adhesion, disrupted mucus production and cell-stress signalling in the gut lining. These are plausible pathways from lab and mouse work, not demonstrated causes of symptoms in ordinary eating.

What we still do not know about Maltodextrin

Whether typical dietary maltodextrin exposure affects gut symptoms or the microbiome in healthy people, and who might be more susceptible, remains largely unstudied in humans.

Great Britain regulatory context

Maltodextrin is a permitted food ingredient rather than an authorised additive, so it does not appear on the UK/GB additive register in the way E-numbered emulsifiers or thickeners do.

Is maltodextrin the same as malt, or a gluten risk?
